Pat Rahn
Retired Daily News advertising salesperson Patricia Charlotte Maud Carroll Rahn, 72, died Jan 29, 1996, at a care center on Bainbridge Island, Wash., where she had lived for the past few years.
She was born Jan 24, 1924, at her family's home in South Kelso, to Floyd and Dove (Smathers) Carroll, and was raised on a truck garden farm that sold vegetables to local stores. She graduated from Kelso High School in 1941 and supported the war effort by working as a welder in Portland and San Francisco.
She played piano in Sam Smith's band at the Glide Hall. In 1945 she married Clancy King. In 1969 she married Rein Rahn and together they bought the home where she had been born. After her husband died in 1993, she moved to Poulsbo, Wash., to live with her daughter.
She was employed by the Daily news for 21 years in the display advertising department, retiring May 31, 1986. She was active in the Kelso American Legion Auxiliary, Wallace School PTA, Camp Fire Girls and Boy Scouts. She and her first husband were foster parents to more than 20 young people. She was a talented seamstress by trade and hobby. On Bainbridge Island she was a faithful member of the Evergreen Singers, She had a great sense of humor and a generous, tender heart.
Survivors include two sons, Brian King of Kelso, and Patrick King of Ashland, Ore.; two daughters, Candace Wallace of Poulsbo and Vicky Faulkner of Vancouver; two brothers, Floyd Carroll of Kelso and Sam Carroll of Lacey, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Her sister, Virginia, died in 1966.
No services will be held at her request. Remembrances may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Longview.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bainbridge Island Funeral Home.
