(Researched by Freda Carley Peterson, Hillside cemetery, May 25, 2008)LUGG, HERBERT WILLIAM "BERT" – Died 1947 Husband of Nora Burke Father of Gladys June, Vivian Mary Jane and Lavaughn Marguerite Lugg Son of William A. and Mary Jane Corlett Lugg Nephew of Clara Corlett Clague Grandson of Cyprus E. Lugg (11) - Apr 8, 1889 - Sept 8, 1947 - Age 58 YearsBert died of heart failure and pneumonia at the San Juan Hospital after an illness of more than five years and hospitalization of several months. His grandfather, Cyprus E. Lugg, had come to Silverton from England in the early 1880s, and managed the North Star Mine on Sultan Mountain. He later moved to Cripple Creek then to Denver, where he died in June 1890. Bert's parents, William Lugg and Mary Jane Corlett, were married in Silverton in 1888, where William worked as a watchmaker, jeweler and miner. Bert was born in Silverton the next year and was the third generation of the Lugg family to live in Silverton. (Bert's heart was on the right side of his body instead of the left). Bert lived several years with his aunt, Clara Corlett Clague, in Cripple Creek.
In September 1909 Bert and Miss Nora Burke were married. Nora was the daughter of Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke Turner, and step-daughter of Edward Howard (sometimes called H.A.) Turner. The ceremony took place at the Congregational Church in Silverton, with Rev. A.C. Hacke officiating. Three daughters were born to Bert and Nora, Gladys June on June 23, 1910, Vivian Mary Jane on January 16, 1916, and Lavaughn Marguerite on November 27, 1920. (Their youngest, Lavaughn, died in 1931 and is buried at Hillside. Gladys, who married Carl Larson on June 18, 1930, died March 29, 1969, and is buried in Durango. Vivian graduated from Silverton High School in 1934 and married William Loftus September 5, 1937. She died in Durango February 19, 1990 and is buried there at Greenmount Cemetery.)
Bert Lugg worked many years for the town of Silverton, and drove a team of horses for the street and water departments. He had a fine record because of his attention to duty and his friendliness and helpfulness. He also worked at mining, and was employed at the Sunnyside. At the time of his death, the family lived at 751 Greene Street.
Survivors were his wife, Nora, daughters, Gladys (Mrs. Carl A. Larson) and Vivian (Mrs. William Loftus). Also his granddaughters, Carleen Larson and Bonnie Jo Loftus, and grandsons, Herbert Vaughn Larson and Michael Loftus. Bert was also survived by two sisters and an aunt in Cripple Creek, Colorado, and his uncle, James Lugg, in Denver. The funeral was held at the Maguire Chapel and burial was at Hillside, beside his beloved daughter, Lavaughn, in the Lugg-Turner plot. Inscribed on his marker is Dad and At Rest.
