TURNER, JOHN HENRY "JOHNNY" – Died 1958 – Silicosis and Heart
Son of Edward Howard and Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke Turner
Brother of Harry Edward and Orville Turner
Step-brother of Nora Burke Lugg, Frances and William Walter Burke
Grandson of John and Mary Ann Wilson Jennings
and of Jesse Turner
(11) - Nov 19, 1898 - Sept 2, 1958 - Age 59 Years
Over the weekend Johnny died of silicosis and heart problems in his room at the Benson Hotel. He had lived in Silverton continuously for fifty-seven years.
Born in Plymouth County, Iowa, he came with his parents, brother, Harry, and half-sister and brother, Nora and William W. Burke, to San Juan County when he was two years old. He never married, and was employed at the Sunnyside Mill many years, where his work was considered the best. After the Sunnyside closed down, John worked at other mills, his last employment being at the Pride of the West Mill. Ill health forced his retirement from active work the previous fall. Johnny was always willing to do his bit toward helping his fellow man and the community.
Survivors were his brother, Harry, and his nieces, Vivian (Mrs. Bert) Lugg and Gladys June (Mrs. Carl) Larson. He was a charter member of the Silverton Volunteer Fire Department, and members of the department served as his pallbearers. The funeral was held at the Maguire Chapel, and burial was at Hillside beside other departed family members. His tombstone is inscribed At Rest.
