Research by Freda Carley Peterson, May 25, 2008) LUGG, NORA BURKE – Died 1955 Wife of Herbert William "Bert" Lugg Mother of Gladys June, Vivian Mary Jane and Lavaughn Marguerite Lugg Daughter of Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke Turner Granddaughter of John and Mary Ann Wilson Jennings (11) - Jan 1, 1888 - July 15, 1955 (approximately) - Age 67 Years Silverton lost one of its long time and highly respected citizens when Nora died at Mercy Hospital in Durango following an illness of over a year and hospitalization of ten months.
She was born in LeMars, Iowa, the daughter of William and Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke. Other Burke children were William Walter Burke and a little girl, Frances, who died in infancy. No further information was recorded for the father, William Burke. Nora's mother, Jennie, married Edward Howard Turner (sometimes called H.A. Turner) in 1892, and the family moved to Silverton in 1901. Nora attended the Silverton school, and in 1909 she and Bert Lugg, a well known Silverton man who at that time was employed by the town of Silverton, were married. They were blessed with three daughters, Gladys June, Vivian Mary Jane and Lavaughn Marguerite. Tragically, Lavaughn died in 1931 when she was eleven years old, and Nora's husband, Bert, died in 1947. Both are buried at Hillside.
Nora's survivors were her daughters, Gladys (Mrs. Carl Larson) and Vivian (Mrs. Bill Loftus), grandchildren, Carleen and Vaughn Larson, Bonnie Jo and Michael Loftus, and her half-brothers, Harry "Fatty" and John Turner, well known Silverton men. The funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Church, Rev. Jerome Rykowski officiating, and burial was at Hillside beside her husband and daughter, Lavaughn, and near other family members. Pallbearers were John Foreman, John Bonaventura, Renaldo "Snarky" Andreatta, Angelo Dalla, Phil McCluskey, Sr. and Nick Heidy.

Last Sunday Miss Nora Burke, step-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Turner, became the happy bride of Bert Lugg, a popular Silverton boy. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A. C. Hacke at the Congregational church. The band boys were out in full force to start the happy couple down the stream of life amidst the strains of the sweet serenade. The Standard joins their many friends in wishing for them a life of joy and happiness.
