BURKE, WILLIAM WALTER SR. - Died 1941 – Heart ProblemsHusband of Hazel SleepFather of William Walter Burke, Jr., and William Jennings BurkeBrother of Frances Burke and Nora Burke (Lugg)Half-brother of Harry Edward "Fatty", John and Orville TurnerSon of William and Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke (later Turner)Grandson of John and Mary Ann Wilson Jennings (7) - Mar 15, 1891 - Sept 14, 1941 - Age 50 YearsBill died at the San Juan Hospital after several months of failing health, and heart problems for about ten years; Dr. Rechnitz was his attending physician. Born in LeMars, Iowa, the son of William and Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke (later Turner), his sisters were Frances, who died when two years old, and Nora, who married Bert Lugg of Silverton in 1909. Bill's father, William Burke, was born in Shelby County, Iowa; no other information was recorded for him.
Bill's mother, Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke, who was born in Mason County, Illinois, married Edward Howard Turner in 1892 when Bill was about a year old. (Edward Howard Turner was also known as "H.A." Turner). The three sons born to them were Harry Edward "Fatty" in 1894, John, in 1898, and Orville, who died in infancy. The family came to the Silverton area in about 1900. Edward H. Turner, Bill's step-father, died in 1911 and is buried at Hillside.
Bill Burke went to work early in life at the Sunnyside Mill. On April 6, 1925, he and Miss Hazel Sleep were married in Eureka at the home of A.B. Marquand. Their first child, William Walter, Jr., died at birth in 1926; they later had another son, William Jennings Burke, who was born October 31, 1928. In about 1931 Bill went to work at the new Shenandoah-Dives Mill, and had worked until recently as shift foreman at the mill. Hazel, Bill's wife, died in 1938, three years before Bill's death.
Survivors in Silverton were his son, Billy, age 12 years; his mother, Mrs. Jane “Jennie” Jennings Burke Turner; his sister, Nora (Mrs. Herbert W. Lugg); his half-brothers, Harry "Fatty" and John Turner; four nieces and a nephew. Also surviving were his aunts, Mrs. Scott Seaworth of Durango and Mrs. Orville Bradfield of Bisbee, Arizona. The funeral was held at the Maguire Funeral Chapel, and pallbearers were Bill's long time friends and fellow workers: Aldo Bonavida, Alcide Fedrizzi, John Glanville, James W. Hook, Floyd Kendrick and Wilbur T. Maxwell. Burial was at Hillside in the Sleep family plot, near his wife.
