      OBITUARY FOR DOVE CARROLL
      The Daily News, Longview, Wash., Saturday August 13, 1983
      DOVE CARROLL
      Dove Mae Smathers Carroll of 508 Hawthorne St., Kelso, died Aug 12, 1983, in a local nursing home at the age of 84.
      She was born Oct, 12, 1898 at Waynesville, N.C., the daughter of Oak Point-Stella pioneers Daniel and Kate Smathers. At age 4 she came to the area from Waynesville with her parents on one of the first trains to Washington.
      She attended grade school at Oak Point before her family moved to Peardale Lane in West Kelso where she attended the Kelso Academy and graduated from Kelso High School in 1917.
      Mrs. Carroll attended Bellingham Normal school before marrying her husband, Floyd Carroll, on June 10, 1918.
      The couple had a truck garden and greenhouse supplying vegetables to local stores. They later went into the logging business in the Ostrander area. He preceded her in death March 28, 1952.
      Mrs. Carroll was an active member of Kelso Central Christian church. She was also a member of the Auxiliary VFW Cootiettes, and was a past president of the Kelso American Legion Auxiliary. Her volunteer work included more than 1,000 hours in local hospitals.
      She is survived by a daughter, Pat Rahn of Kelso; three sons, Floyd George Carroll of Kelso, Sam Carroll of Lacey, and Tom Carroll of North Bend, Wash.; a sister, Maude Franklin of Long Beach, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
      She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Leach, in 1966.
