718 BIRTH DATE: Some IGI sources list a birth date of 3 Oct 1833. Elizabeth Strong

719 BIRTH: Salt Lake Temple Records list her birthplace as York, York, Pennsylvania.
The birth date listed for Elizabeth is taken from a church record listing a daughter born to Schim Strong. This birth date is given with no mother's name and no name for the child. It is unsure if this is a correct birth date for Elizabeth. Some people think this daughter born to Schim Strang is the last child born to James Strong Sr. and his wife Mary Imenhauser. There is no proof to support that assumption either. Mary would have been very old to be having children in 1796 (age 51). For the time being we are letting the date stand as listed, being aware that this may later be found to be an error.

724 JAMES STRONG'S WILL NOTES 8 CHILDREN. HE HAD 6 SONS. IT MENTIONS DAUGHTERS (PLURAL). IN THE 1790 CENSUS, THE HOUSEHOLD CONTAINED 4 FEMALES. IN THE 1800 CENSUS, IT CONTAINED ONE FEMALE UNDER AGE 10 AND ONE BETWEEN 16 AND 25. TO DATE WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO IDENTIFY THIS CHILD.

1. There is a church record of a daughter born to Schim Strang (who may or may not be the same person as James Strong, Sr.). No mother is listed for this daughter. Some records attribute that daughter as this female child.

2. Some records indicate this child to be Elizabeth Strong, but this is an error, for Elizabeth was actually born to James, Jr.

THERE ARE QUESTIONS ON JAMES STRONG's VITAL INFORMATION AND HIS FAMILY THAT STILL NEED TO BE SORTED-OUT.
James Strong, Jr.

742 LOCATION: According to Mrs. Samuel Helman, James Strong returned from Kansas to Indiana County, Pennsylvania (with the help of his extended family), lived there for awhile, and then moved his family to South Dakota. The family did not want to go, and neighbors remembered hearing the mother and children crying loudly as they left their home. They said good-bye to no one, as they were so worked-up. When James once again wanted to return home, his extended family felt that they couldn't help him again. However, the move proved to be a good one in the long run. There they became prominent in Rapid Valley. His son, William, became a prominent cattle man. James Strong

743 THERE ARE STILL QUESTIONS ON JAMES STRONG'S VITAL INFORMATION AND FAMILY THAT NEED TO BE SORTED-OUT. AMONGST WHICH:
1. HIS WILL LISTS 8 CHILDREN TOTAL. HE HAD 6 SONS. IT ALSO MENTIONS DAUGHTERS (PLURAL).
NOTE: SOME FAMILY GROUP RECORDS LIST ANOTHER SON, JACOB, BORN IN 1766 IN WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, WHO DIED ABOUT 1821. ALL ORDINANCES HAVE BEEN COMPLETED FOR HIM AS A MEMBER OF THIS FAMILY, BUT THERE IS NO EVIDENCE TO DATE THAT THIS CHILD WAS EVER IN THIS FAMILY.
2. THE 1790 CENSUS RECORDS LIST 2 MALES UNDER 16. IT LISTS 3 MALES 16 ANDS OLDER. IT LISTS 4 FEMALES .
3. THE FAMILY IS ALSO IN THE 1800 CENSUS LISTING 1 MALES 16 TO 25, 1 MALE 45 AND OVER, 1 FEMALE UNDER 10, AND 1 FEMALE 16 TO 25. (Series M32, Roll 44, p. 1384).

MILITARY: James may have served in the Revolutionary war. There are three James Strongs that served. We think he was a member of the 5th class of Inhabitants of Chanceford Township (Young, pp. 103, 106--this is the best citation I have).

ORIGIN: There are at least two theories as to James's origins:
1. In STRONG HISTORIES, Vol.V, published for The Strong Family Ass'n. of America by Edwards Brother, Inc., 2500 South State Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 48106-1007, 1996, p.148 it is stated that "tradition credits James Strong with being Scotch-Irish. Supposedly he desired to come from Ireland to America but was without sufficient passage money. Upon arrival in Pennsylvania, he was indentured to a German man in order to provide the ship's captain with passage money. The story continues that he served his indenture, adopted the German language and then married one of his daughters." Tradition holds that Adam Imenhauser was the German man to whom he was indentured. It also holds that James Strong learned German from his wife. James Strong could have been called "Schim Strang" by the Germans. James Strong, Jr. donated land for a church to be built in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. The services in that church were first conducted in German.

The Scotch-Irish were Presbyterian Scots, originally about 200,0000 settlers, who settled in the province of Ulster (comprising the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, Managhan, and Tyrone). upon emigrating from Scotland to Northern Ireland in the 17th century. They were Scots who lived for generations in Ireland before coming to America.
There were two main Scottish migrations into the Ulster area of Ireland. The first took place sometime after 1603, after the Irish landholders were removed from the area when they refused to submit to rule under the English King. King James of Scotland and England granted English and Scottish men large land grants of the vacated land. These men imported Protestant English-speaking tenants into Ireland from their own estates in Scotland and England.
The second wave of Scottish immigration into Ulster took place in the 1690's, when tens of thousands of Scots fled famine in the border regions. The Scottish people began immigrating to the American Colonies from 1717 to the 1770's, with the Scotch-Irish from Ulster and Scotland comprising the most numerous emigrating from the British Isles to America. They settled mostly in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
David B. Strong indicated in an e-mail to Bud Strong that he felt James, Sr. came from either County Antrim or County Down. The Scotch-Irish migrated to America in the first decades of the 18th century. They settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

2. In a DUP booklet, SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF HARRIET LOUISA STRONG POLL written by William and Ida Poll taken from the Melissa Barrett Camp, DUP, Ucon, Idaho, 1950, the following is found: "Harriet Louisa Strong Poll was born in Harrisville, Weber Co., Utah April 23, 1863, at the home of her parents William and Martha Bromley Alvord Strong.
Her father, William Strong, who was the son of Jacob Strong, whose first ancestor by the name of Strong was smuggled into America from Ireland when a boy and lawfully adopted into the family of a man named Strong....."

4. DNA testing completed on two of Utah's pure male descendants from James Strong, Sr., has shown there is a 99.9% certainty of James Strong, Sr. sharing heritage with the Balcaskie, Scotland Le Strange family line. David B. Strong's impression is that James probably came from County Down or County Antrim in Northern Ireland.

5. There is a family tradition that somewhere documents exist listing our James Strong, identified as Senior, as James, Jr., which would indicate he had a father named James Strong. Those documents have never been uncovered by current Strong genealogists.

BIRTH: The birth date comes from the tombstone of Schim Strang. No direct connection has ever been proven that Schim Strang and James Strong are the same person.

DEATH
1. The last Will and Testament of James Strong written 12 March 1804 is located in the records of York County, Pennsylvania, USA, Will Book L, Page 57. The inventory of his possessions upon death was filed in the same county 3 April 1804. The will was probated 26 March1804 (Source: Evidences of the Strong Families of York County before the year 1850, p. 120). Wife was listed as Mary. James Strong listed as a yeoman. Executor was Jacob Strong.

The will of James Strong was executed 1 March 1804 and attested by Fredrick Hartman and Jacob Klinefelter, filed by Jacob Strong as Executor on 26 March 1804, at York County, Pennsylvania, and located in Will Book L, Page 57, and the Inventory was filed 3 April 1804 at the same location-

747 According to the book, STRONG FAMILY HISTORIES, Vol. V, noted in the sources, Johan Jacob Strong and his wife, Catherine moved from Pennsylvania to Mahoning County, Ohio in 1830 and thence to Fulton County, Indiana in 1852.

Some records indicate that Johan Jacob Strong married Catherine Emenheiser. The origin of this may be the book, "The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong of Northampton, Massachusetts" written by Benjamin Woodridge Dwight (1871), p. 1532. Subsequent research done by Grace Williams, a family genealogist, indicates that he married a Catherine Schwab.

DEATH: There is a problem with Jacob's death date, as he died before he signed his will, according to the dates we have.

WILL OF JACOB STRONG

In the name of God, Amen. Jacob Strong of the Township of Henry and County of Fulton and State of Indiana, being of sound mind and memory, do therefore make and ordain and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament first after all my lawful debts are paid I desire that all my real estate to remain as it now is undivided until my youngest child becomes of age to act for herself. All such personal property that can be spared off from the place may be sold retaining tools, teams that is necessary to carry on the farm which I also wish to have my barn finish as soon as convenient that is now … to Jacob Harmon. After all my debts are paid I want my Administrator to keep all money that may be left in hand and pay over to the family as they may be in want of from time to time until the children are all of age and then to be divided equally between them and all share alike. Likewise I made constitute and appoint Jacob Whittenberger to by my Executor of this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 11th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven. [Jacob Strong made a “X” for his mark]

Apparently Jacob was not in his right mind when he signed his will, as noted by his witnesses.
Johan Jacob Strong

748 BIRTH: James T. Strong, son of Jacob Strong, lists John's birthdate as about 1797 in his personal family records.

DEATH: Strong Family Histories, Vol. V, p. 151, lists a death date of 18 April 1879. At the time he was 79 years of age.

HISTORY: John Strong, Sr. purchased 400 acres of land in what is now Cherryhill Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania and moved his family to their new home about the year 1840. Parts of this land later became the farms of John and Daniel. The original farm and home site where stood the two room log cabin is now (1931) in possession of Edward Lydick, grandson of John and Mary Strong. THREE OR FOUR CHILDREN WERE BORN TO THIS COUPLE, BUT THEY DIED IN INFANCY AND THEIR NAMES AND DATES OF THEIR BIRTH AND DEATH ARE NOT KNOWN. They are buried on the family farm formerly owned by Jacob and Betsy S. Lydick. (Received 12 July 1931 from Francis Strong Helman, 733 Locus Street, Indiana, Pennsylvania.)
